It Takes a Village

Jessica Durham of Montana was sentenced to five years for unlawful marijuana distribution after she gave her 18-month old daughter, Michala, a water pipe to inhale.

She said that smoking improved the baby's appetite and made her lethargic and mellow, the same effects she noted in herself when she smoked pot. Is that lethargic as in "brain dead?" Couldn't she just have given her a pacifier or something? What's wrong with this picture?

She appealed the conviction and the sentence. The Court upheld her conviction, but found that the sentence exceeded relevant Federal law which allows no more than two years in prison for this offense.

There's actually a precedent for this? I wonder how often it comes up. And will the trendy children's boutiques begin carrying baby bongs now? Presumably, her daughter is going to rehab.

Meanwhile, a Ukrainian woman, now 23, who was "forgotten" by her parents and raised by dogs until she was discovered at age 8, was interviewed recently.

Oxana Malaya, one of about 100 known feral children, has the tested mental age of six, stilted speech and an uncoordinated gait. She buries any gifts she receives and runs into the woods when she's upset. She still knows how to bark, run on all fours, pant with her tongue out, and dry herself off by shaking.

She may actually be better off than the bong baby, but what I want to know is, what kind of dogs were they? And how on earth do you forget your child for eight years? Seriously.

Sadly, these are reminders of the sometimes sad world we live in...we should all strive to be the change we want to see in the world.

Yeah, I get all misty thinking about parents like these. It's beyond sad that they have children while some people who would be wonderful and talented parents can't have them.

Hopefully the bong baby will be better off now that the mother isn't around for awhile, sad to say.....on the lighter side, maybe they can make a new "Tarzan(a)" movie...
Peace!

I don't know -- Oxana of the Dogs doesn't have quite the panache of Tarzan of the Apes.

People should be required to qualify before breeding. But deciding who would make such decisions is dicey.

Such sad events...
Parenting to some is an honor...
and to others... It baffles me...

DJN and Pendullum,

We're all on the same page here. Really sad. Children are such a blessing, and they all deserve to be cherished and protected.

Good going. So she's managed to kill off some of her baby's brain cells before they've even fully developed. What a woman.

She should be sterilized.

And I can't tell you how a child gets forgotten. This was not a mistake. They meant to leave her. She'll never be fully socialized, I'm afraid.

We need licenses to drive, get married, and fish. But parenting... no prerequisites there. Unfortunate.

I doubt she cleaned up during her pregnancy, so the baby was probably born addicted to various substances and never had a chance.

I've wondered for years why anyone can legally breed, even those who can't get a license to drive or fish.

Sterilized, hell. She should be executed.

And how, exactly, do you get dogs to raise your child? "Here, Lassie. Lick your new baby and give her some milk. Good girl!!"

I was abandoned at age 3 in the Arizona desert and raised by a kindly pack of coyotes. This explains a lot of my abnormal human social behaviors such as licking myself in public. Doesn't explain the drug use though.

Just to lighten up this thread a little...

A kindly pack of drug-free coyotes... What's a little licking between friends?

Do you still eat dead rodents when you miss your mama's cooking?

Myhearthurts,

Sadly, they are true. And there are many more stories just as bad. I think that we're a very messed-up species.
